Margot used Friday to work with the crew. The set was starting to come together. There were hanging racks with costumes. Tables were filling with props. They were making progress, and according to Heather, tickets were selling quickly, so quickly that all of the opening weekend was sold out, and most of the tickets for the next two weekends. If sales continued like this, the season could very well sell outâeven before the show opened.
Saturday morning Margot slept in and then after a walk and some stretching, she showered and tackled chores at home. Laundry. Bills. Responding to emails sheâd let slide.
Saturday evening, Margot picked up dinner from her dadâs favorite Italian restaurant downtown. Sheâd called and asked him what he wanted, and heâd said lasagna, chicken Parmesan, garlic bread, maybe one of those big, chopped salads. Margot had laughed. âThatâs a lot of food, Dad.â
âIâm saving some for tomorrow. Itâll be my lunch and dinner.â
âI guess after not eating this week, you have an appetite.â
âThatâs right.â
âTiramisu, too, Dad?â
âIâve got some ice cream here. That should do.â
Margot arrived at the house just before six, and let herself in, giving a shout so her dad knew she was there.
âIn the den,â he called back. âWatching the end of the game.â
Her dad was a huge San Francisco Giants fan. She grew up watching him watch games. He loved the 49ers, too, and the Golden State Warriors. Dad had played both baseball and football for Fresno State, but when he blew out his knee his sophomore year, he shifted his interests, got a degree in criminology, and moved back to Paso, where he got a job with the county, working for the sheriffâs department. He spent his entire career with the sheriffâs department, was getting close to retirement when her mom died. He stayed on another couple of years because he needed that family since there was no one else at home.
Margot joined her dad in the den, glanced at the game. It was only the fifth inning. âYou should have told me there was a game on tonight. We could have rescheduled.â
âIâm taping it. I can always rewind and watch it later.â
âEven after you know the final score?â
âI like to see the big plays. If there are no big plays, I might not watch it.â
âSo what should I do? Dish up dinner . . . wait?â she asked.
âHow about we wait until the bottom of this inning? Sit with me a minute. Itâs nice to have my favorite girl here.â
Smiling, she sat down on the arm of his chair. He took her hand and held it. Together they watched the first batter strike out, and then the next. The program cut to commercial break, and her dad looked at her. âYou look pretty tonight,â he said. âAre you doing something different with your hair?â
Margot reached up, smoothing her hair. âI just left it down. I think you usually see me with it in a ponytail.â
âIt looks pretty like that.
